ConfigMgr 2012 R2 and next version of Windows Intune announced, yesterday

TENA2013Yesterday was a very big day for Microsoft, not only ConfigMgr 2012 R2 and the new version of Windows Intune were announced but also Windows Server 2012 R2, System Center 2012 R2 and SQL Server 2014. During the Microsoft System Center 2012 SP1 – Configuration Manager Overview session, held at TechEd NA yesterday, some nice new R2 features were shown. The R2 version of ConfigMgr 2012 will bring us lots of new features;

  • Support for Windows 8.1
  • Support Windows 8.1 via ConfigMgr client or using the Mobile device Management Agent
  • Supported via the lightweight management agent:
    • Push Software Distribution
    • New settings for resource access and security
    • Selective Wipe (installed apps)
  • MDM support via
    • Workplace join (register the device in AD)
      • Supported for Windows 8.1 and IOS
  • MDM enrollment via ConfigMgr and Windows Intune
  • Self-service portals via native apps for Windows x86, iOS and Android with support for corporate branding (custom company logo)
  • Support for Work folders in Windows 8.1
    • Configure syncing of Work Folders across your devices
    • Access your work folders from the Windows 8.1 self service portal
  • Provisioning VPN profiles, WIFI profiles, App triggered VPN and certificate management via ConfigMgr 2012 R2 for
    • Windows 8.1
    • Windows 8.1 RT
    • iOS
    • Android
  • Support for Selective Wipe for Windows 8.1, Windows 8.1 RT, iOS and Android
    • Data that is removed;
      • Email
      • Apps installed through the MDM channel
      • Profiles (Wifi/VPN
      • Certificates
      • MDM policies
      • Management Agent
      • Corporate app data
  • MAC OS X enrolment via client User  Interface instead of scripts
  • In-console monitoring improved to make it easier to track the content distribution status.
  • Reporting ability to show how much a DP is used.
  • Enhancements for Pull DP.
  • Ability to reassign clients between ConfigMgr sites within a hierarchy
  • Support for restoring SQL to a different server during recovery
  • Native support for x64 Powersehll ConfigMgr modules
  • OSD enhancements:
    • Support for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2
    • Import WinPE 3.1 boot images
    • VHD actions are create and modify, and upload to VMM
    • Aoo install status in TS
    • Integrate key MDT ZTI tasks to native ConfigMgr OSD
  • RBA support for reporting
  • All alert types have email notification 🙂
